Brief History of Web Design
Web site design has been around since the 90's. With the majority of sites are presented in HTML (HyperText Markup Language). HTML has evolved to its 5th version, and can now produce even better attractive and dynamic web sites.

The structure of web site design can be categorised in two main areas:
1. The Design
The main objective of a web site is to meet the requirements of the client. Usually this is designed to attract and convert internet users into customers, subscribers, donators and followers. The design itself is primarily assuring that the viewer has come to the right place, or that they have found what they are looking for. It is the responsibility of the web design company or sole web designer, to create and produce a suitable design that is relevant to the target market in both functionality and aeathetics. This is usually achieved through various mediums, programmes and software. This could include any combination of the following:
- Mock-Up / Hand Drawn Designs - Conceptual worked to produce layouts and visuals for the site design.
- Adobe Photoshop / Fireworks - Can be used to generate digital graphics and design elements of the site design.
- Adobe Flash - Can be used to produce animation, movement & interaction elements of the site web site.
- Adobe Dreamweaver - Is used to build the web site for the Internet.
- CSS - Cascading Style Sheets. CSS is used in connection with HTML to design and style the web site. CSS aid in advanced design features, reduce file sizes and creates a universal styling document.
2. The Development Stage
Upon completion of the website design stage, the web site will then move onto the development stage. Development is used to put a simple web page in HTML, convert complex designs into a 'Skin', Database driven and Content Management web site. Web Developers /Designers can use the following development languages to create a web site or continue website maintenance:
* HTML - Hypertext Markup Language is the basic language for presenting a website.
* XHTML - is the markup language with the same depth as HTML, but XHTML also conforms to XML syntax.
* XML - is a custom language for creating custom markup.
* RSS - Stands for 'Real Simple Syndication' and is a popular format for publishing frequently updated articles and stories like blogs.
* ASP.NET - Is the Windows Framework used for dynamic applications.
* PHP - Is a free (released under the PHP License) scripting language for constructing dynamic web sites.
* MySQL - Is an Open Source Database platform (available under terms of the GNU General Public License) and used in conjunction with PHP and other languages to store and retrieve data.
* AJAX - A coding nickname for the combination technique of XML and Javascript for making rich internet applications.
* Perl / CGI - A scripting language that was developed for NASA.
* Actionscript - is a scripting language primarily used within and to integrate Flash.
